Vrbo vs. Airbnb: Which Is Better?

Vrbo for larger groups who plan ahead; Airbnb for one or two people or a private room. At our homes, Vrbo bookings had a median 3 guests, booked 23 days out; Airbnb bookings, 2 guests and 14 days.

Our stake: we list homes on both, and we'd rather you book direct. Here's how to skip both.

Questions travelers ask

Is Vrbo cheaper than Airbnb?

It depends on the home and the dates. Airbnb is moving home hosts to a single fee built into the nightly price, while Vrbo charges travelers a service fee that's included in the total it shows. Both show the total before taxes up front, so compare that number for the same home, dates and guests.

Is Vrbo or Airbnb better for groups?

Vrbo, in our bookings. Vrbo doesn't allow spaces shared with the host or other guests, and at our Portland homes 33.9% of Vrbo bookings had four or more guests, against 25.0% on Airbnb.

Are the same homes on both?

In our case, often: 131 of our Portland homes took bookings on Vrbo in the past year, and 101 of those also took bookings on Airbnb and Booking.com.

Which has better cancellation policies?

Neither by default: each host picks a policy. For stays under 28 nights, Airbnb offers four standard options, from Flexible to Firm, and Vrbo offers seven, from Day-before to No refund. Read the policy on the listing before you book.

Can I pay a host outside the app?

Not for an Airbnb booking. With narrow exceptions, Airbnb prohibits payments outside its platform, and paying outside means losing AirCover. If the host has its own website, book there instead.
