Pearl District vs. Nob Hill: Where to Stay in Northwest Portland
Stay in the Pearl for a short, car-free visit in a hotel or loft beside downtown. Stay in Nob Hill for a full home with a kitchen, or a family or group trip. They're 20 minutes apart on foot.
Our stake: we host 46 homes in Northwest Portland, none inside the Pearl.

Choose the Pearl District if…
- You're here two or three nights and want downtown on foot. Powell's City of Books sits on the Pearl's southern edge.
- You'd like a front desk and a lobby. The Pearl has several hotels.
- You love galleries. First Thursday gallery walks run the first Thursday of each month, typically from 5 pm.
Choose Nob Hill if…
- You need two or more bedrooms, a kitchen, or room for a dog. Our homes average 2.4 bedrooms on NW 23rd and 2.9 a few blocks east, and 21 of the 46 take pets.
- You'd rather walk to coffee and dinner than to office towers. Food comes up in 30% of written reviews of our NW 23rd homes, second only to Mississippi Avenue among the neighborhoods we host in.
- You want trails. The Lower Macleay trailhead at NW 29th and Upshur leads into Forest Park and, a little over 3 miles on, to Pittock Mansion.
What guests write about our Nob Hill homes
How often written reviews mention each topic. A mention isn't always a complaint ("not too loud" counts too), so read this as what guests notice.

"It's an old building on a very busy corner so noise comes with the territory (outside traffic and upstairs neighbors). I felt very comfortable staying here, loved the energy and charm!"

Where each one falls short
The Pearl
Lodging is hotels and lofts rather than houses, so a group that wants several bedrooms under one roof has fewer choices. Parking means a meter or a paid garage.
Nob Hill
Street noise on 23rd itself. Downtown is a Streetcar ride, not a stroll. Street parking is time-limited from 9 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday, and guests between NW 19th and 22nd mention parking more than anywhere else we host.
What about downtown?
If you want to be steps from Pioneer Square, MAX and the waterfront, a downtown hotel is the simplest choice; we don't host downtown. The MAX Red Line runs from the airport to Pioneer Square in about 40 minutes, and the NS Streetcar runs from downtown through the Pearl to NW 23rd and Marshall.
Questions travelers ask
Is the Pearl District or Nob Hill better for families?
Nob Hill, if you need space. Our homes there average 2.4 to 2.9 bedrooms, and Forest Park is close by. We don't host in the Pearl, so check bedroom counts on any Pearl listing.
Do I need a car?
Most visitors don't. The NS Streetcar runs from NW 23rd and Marshall through the Pearl to downtown, and the MAX Red Line reaches downtown from the airport in about 40 minutes. A car helps for day trips.
Is NW 23rd noisy?
The avenue itself is busy: 11.4% of written reviews of our NW 23rd homes mention noise, the highest of any neighborhood we host in. Light sleepers should ask for a back bedroom; one guest wrote that "being in back of building helps with street noise."
How far apart are the Pearl and Nob Hill?
About a mile: roughly 20 minutes on foot from Jamison Square to NW 23rd and Lovejoy.
