Review Highlights

Charming vintage home in a vibrant, walkable neighborhood packed with restaurants, cafes, and shops. Spacious with comfortable beds, equipped kitchen, and a lovely front porch—perfect for exploring a lively Portland community.

James place is a great deal for 4 people (2 couples) for a several days. There is ample space and the rooms are very quiet. The location is very walkable and on the Burnside bus line to get you into downtown really quickly. No complaints would stay again!

Great East Pdx house, just what you want for adults who like to travel and “live” where people live. Cool neighborhood, very walkable, lots of great places to eat and shop nearby. Nice vintage house with the big porch, roomy rooms, good linens and nice furniture.

The home is located in a nice part of SE Portland, with plenty of good shops and restaurants nearby, and a short distance to either Hawthorne Street, or downtown. Parking was easy (either in the driveway, or on the street). The home itself was reasonably clean, and the kitchen contained everything needed for a short stay, even if doing a little cooking at home. As other reviewers have noted, despite it being a home, it does not have a "homey" feel. Rather, it feels quite sterile. There is no artwork anywhere, the walls are bare, no extra blankets or pillows (either on the beds or in the living room) -- just none of the touches that would make it feel more comfortable and inviting. When we arrived (our visit was in late December), the inside thermostat was set to 55 degrees, so we had to leave the house for over two hours after check-in while we waited for the interior temps to rise to the point where we could take off our jackets.

Neighborhood highlights

Commonly known as "Foodie Row," the Hawthorne/Buckman District places you within walking distance of a diverse array of top-notch local flavors—no chain restaurants here! Make new friends over vegan poutine fries and grilled PB&Js at the Cartopia food cart pod, share a pie at Apizza Scholls (consistently voted Portland’s favorite pizza), or opt for a fancy night out at Castagna—all within a 1.5-mile stretch. Portland isn’t just for foodies. Hawthorne’s vibrant indie spirit is alive with an abundance of made-in-Oregon shops and boutiques to explore, making it a true hipster haven. Catch a movie at Bagdad Theater and Pub, a revamped 1920s theater turned view-and-brew venue serving local McMenamins food and microbrews. If bar hopping through neighborhoods isn’t your idea of fun, head up to Mt. Tabor, a 196-acre city park atop a dormant volcano vent. Here, you’ll find miles of hiking trails and incredible panoramic views of the city, perfect for a day of outdoor adventure.
