The Asylum is a twelve-apartment building on the corner of SE 19th Avenue and SE Hawthorne Boulevard, thirty-five metres from the Hawthorne strip itself. Ladd's Addition is a six-minute walk west, the Hawthorne Asylum food carts about nine, and the Hawthorne Bridge into downtown a little over a mile.
Every apartment is a complete private home rather than a hotel room: its own full kitchen, its own bathroom, its own entrance, and a smart lock instead of a front desk. They run from a 282 sq ft studio for two up to a 1,185 sq ft four-bedroom that sleeps eight, spread two to five apartments across three floors. Pets are welcome in all twelve, which is unusual for a building this size and is the reason a lot of guests find us at all.
The top-floor four-bedroom opens onto a private rooftop deck — string lights, outdoor dining, and the city over the treetops. Booked together the building holds sixteen bedrooms and up to thirty-eight guests, so families travelling in several parties, wedding groups and relocating teams can take a floor or the whole thing. Call us and we will hold the dates across every apartment at once rather than making you book them one at a time.

Every apartment has a smart lock. You get a unique door code and directions before you arrive, so there is nobody to meet and no key to collect. Check-in is from 4:00 PM. Check-out is 11:00 AM in nine of the twelve apartments and 10:00 AM in 202, 205 and 303 — your confirmation states yours.
Are pets allowed?
Yes, in all twelve apartments. That is unusual for a building this size — most buildings take pets in a unit or two — and it means you are not restricted to whichever one happened to be free. A pet fee applies and is shown before you pay.
Which apartment has the rooftop deck?
The top-floor four-bedroom, 305. The deck is private to that apartment: string lights, outdoor dining and lounge seating, and a view over the treetops toward the city. It is also bookable as a three-bedroom at a lower occupancy if you do not need the fourth room.
Can I book more than one apartment?
Yes. The whole building is sixteen bedrooms and up to thirty-eight guests across twelve apartments. Call us and we will hold the dates across every unit at once rather than making you book them separately and hope they all stay available.
Is parking available?
Free street parking is available on SE 19th Avenue and the surrounding residential blocks. There is no dedicated lot or garage for the building. Hawthorne itself is metered, so park on the side streets.
What is nearby?
The building is on the corner of SE 19th and SE Hawthorne, so the Hawthorne strip — restaurants, coffee, bars, vintage shops and bookstores — starts at the end of the block. Ladd's Addition and its rose gardens are about a six-minute walk, the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod about nine, and downtown is a little over a mile across the Hawthorne Bridge.
